Fitting & Safe Use of Hand Tools

Objectives: To provide delegates with the necessary knowledge, skills and safe working practices to enable them to safely undertake a range of fitting tasks in an industrial environment.

Course duration: 5 days

Pre-course requirements: Delegates should have a basic understanding of the use of hand tools, along with an understanding of workplace health and safety.

Programme Overview

Safety
• Workshop safety and preparing to work in an engineering workshop.
• Protection clothing and associated equipment.

Marking Out and Measuring
• Reading and interpreting engineering drawings with particular reference to
• mechanical maintenance requirements
• Use of common marking out tools used in the production of basic profiles
• Demonstration & individual practice in the following:
• Micrometers, Verniers, Callipers, Digital Block Slip Gauges (metric & imperial)

Hand Tools and Machinery
• Demonstration and practice of the correct and safe use of files, chisels, hammers, saws, spanners, wrenches.
• Demonstration and practice exercises on pillar drills, band saws, pedestal grinders and any relevant machinery.

Materials
• Description of the basic characteristics of materials:
• Ferrous and non-ferrous
• Non-metallic (plastics & fibres) and their application for given conditions

ALL COURSE NOTES/WORK FOLDER AND
REFERENCE MATERIAL ARE PROVIDED ON OUR PROGRAMMES.
Please also be aware there will be home study, tests (both practical and theoretical) for all our programmes.
