Occupational Summary

Occupational Profile

For this Level 2 Stairlift, Platform Lift, Service Lift Electromechanics course you gain knowledge in the following aspects.

A Stairlift is a mechanism used for transporting less able persons up and down stairways. A Lifting Platform is a mechanism to raise a wheelchair and its occupant to overcome a step or similar vertical barrier. A Service Lift (also known as a Dumb‐waiter) is a mechanism used for transporting small goods from one floor to another

Stairlift, Lifting Platform and Service Lift Electromechanics work in varying environments including domestic, retail and industrial buildings above and below ground. They carry out the installation or maintenance and repair of stairlifts, lifting platforms and service lifts dependent upon the chosen specialism.

They ensure that the stairlift, lifting platform or service lift performs within established parameters in line with the applicable codes and standards, historical and current, required by the EU Machinery Directive. They ensure the stairlift, lifting platform or service lift is safe for use and free from defects.

The skills employed when conducting the work are of a complex nature and draw upon knowledge and experience of a wide range of equipment, mainly comprising mechanical traction or hydraulic systems of varying complexity operating at low and medium speeds, controlled by a microprocessor or analogue control technology.

Stairlift, Lifting Platform and Service Lift Electromechanics install new, high-technology equipment, maintain and repair older equipment of varied age and technology. They carry out the assembly, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical and electronic components forming stairlifts, lifting platforms and service lifts, following safe systems of work.

They must adhere to safe working practices without endangering themselves or others and that the unit meets the requirements of the EU Machinery Directive. On completion of their work, the stairlift, lifting platform or service lift must be safe to use having received the appropriate sign off from a designated Stairlift, Lifting Platform and Service Lift Electromechanic.

The apprentice will follow the Core Knowledge and Skills, and one of the six options shown below. Training will be undertaken on all Core elements and on elements in the Option chosen by the apprentice.

Typical job roles include:

Stairlift installation electromechanic

Stairlift service and repair electromechanic

Lifting platform installation electromechanic

Lifting platform service and repair electromechanic

Service lift installation electromechanic

Core learning and specialist options

Core knowledge, skills and six specialisms

Core: health, safety and environment. Follow risk assessments, method statements and manufacturer instructions, use appropriate PPE and apply safe working and environmental practices.

Core: mechanical technology. Understand the components in stairlift, lifting platform and service lift systems, and use mechanical tools and measuring equipment to adjust and check them.

Core: hydraulic technology. Understand the hydraulic components and operating principles relevant to the selected equipment.

Core: electrical and electronic technology. Use schematics and appropriate instruments for safe wiring, inspection and fault diagnosis of control systems.

Core: planning, documentation and customer communication. Read drawings and instructions, organise work and materials, communicate with customers and record completed work.

Core behaviours. Work safely and ethically, exercise judgement, collaborate with others, communicate clearly and take responsibility for development and the environment.

Option 1: Stairlift installation. Install and set up straight or curved stairlift systems; check alignment, fixings and safety components; commission and test before handover.

Option 2: Stairlift service and repair. Inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair stairlift systems, including controls, charging systems, positioning and safety devices.

Option 3: Lifting platform installation. Install and set up mechanical or hydraulic lifting platforms; check safety components, commission, test and place into service.

Option 4: Lifting platform service and repair. Inspect and maintain lifting platforms; diagnose electrical, mechanical and hydraulic issues; test safe operation before return to use.

Option 5: Service lift installation. Install and set up service lifts; verify mechanical or hydraulic systems and safety devices, then commission and test the installation.

Option 6: Service lift service and repair. Diagnose, service and repair service lifts; inspect positioning, controls and protective equipment; check safety before return to use.

Gateway

Gateway & Mandatory Qualifications

The employer confirms that the apprentice is working at the occupational standard before the end-point assessment organisation checks the remaining gateway requirements.

Entry requirements

Whilst any entry requirements will be a matter for individual employers, typically an apprentice might be expected to have already achieved two GCSEs or level 2 equivalent, in English and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subject.

Employer confirmation that the apprentice is consistently working at or above the required occupational standard.

Completion of the mandated Level 2 QCF NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance and Installation in the appropriate stairlift, lifting platform or service lift pathway.

English and maths requirements met where applicable under the apprenticeship funding rules. Requirements depend in part on the apprentice’s age at the start of training.

A portfolio of evidence prepared during the apprenticeship and submitted at gateway to support the professional interview.

Mandatory Qualification

Mandatory Level 2 qualification

  • Level 2 QCF NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance and Installation
  • Appropriate pathway: stairlift installation or service and repair; lifting platform installation or service and repair; service lift installation or service and repair.

The apprentice must complete this qualification in the relevant pathway: installing or servicing stairlifts, installing or servicing lifting platforms, or installing or servicing service lifts.

End-Point Assessment

ST0251, Stairlift, platform lift, service lift electromechanic Level 2

After the gateway, an independent end-point assessment organisation assesses the apprentice through three separate methods. The Version 1.1 assessment period typically lasts four months and follows the 24-month training programme.

  • Multiple-choice test: Fail, Pass or Distinction.
  • Practical assessment with questions: Fail, Pass or Distinction.
  • Professional interview underpinned by a portfolio: Fail, Pass or Distinction. Overall EPA grades are Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

End-Point Assessment

Version 1.1 specifies three independent end-point assessment methods:

  • Multiple-choice test assessing the relevant occupational knowledge and behaviours.
  • Practical assessment with questions, requiring the apprentice to demonstrate occupational skills and explain the work undertaken.
  • Professional interview underpinned by the portfolio of evidence compiled during the training programme.

The apprentice must pass all three assessment methods to pass the apprenticeship. Successful completion leads to the apprenticeship certificate, alongside the mandated Level 2 qualification.

Portfolio of Evidence Requirement

Portfolio of evidence

The Version 1.1 EPA requires a portfolio of evidence compiled during the training programme and submitted at gateway. It underpins the professional interview; it is not separately graded.

The portfolio typically contains ten distinct pieces of evidence mapped to the knowledge, skills and behaviours assessed at interview. The employer must confirm that the evidence is valid and attributable to the apprentice.

Evidence may include

  • Workplace records such as job cards, service or maintenance records and handover documentation.
  • Witness statements describing direct observations of the apprentice’s work.
  • Annotated photographs showing relevant installation, servicing or repair tasks.
  • Relevant video clips or annotated screenshots, in line with the assessment plan’s evidence limits.
  • Customer feedback, where appropriate and within the assessment plan’s limit.
