Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3) – Dual Discipline
The Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship – Dual Discipline prepares apprentices to maintain, repair, and improve industrial equipment and engineering systems across sectors such as manufacturing, energy, and utilities. Apprentices develop practical skills in fault finding, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and safe working practices, while specialising in either electrical, mechanical, or control and instrumentation maintenance.
The programme combines workplace experience with technical training, helping learners progress into skilled engineering maintenance roles and future career development within the engineering sector.
Who is This Course For?
This apprenticeship is ideal for businesses that need multi-skilled, adaptable engineers capable of working across multiple technical disciplines. Combining either electrical and mechanical engineering or electrical and control & instrumentation engineering, the programme develops broad, cross-functional maintenance skills.
It is particularly well suited to fast-paced production environments, lean engineering teams, and businesses where engineers need to respond quickly to a wide range of maintenance and operational challenges. The apprenticeship supports improved operational flexibility, reduced downtime, and stronger all-round engineering capability.

Occupational Summary
Engineering Maintenance Technicians (Dual Discipline) are responsible for maintaining the safe and efficient operation of plant, machinery, and equipment across a wide range of
industries including manufacturing, energy, utilities, processing, and more.
What makes this pathway stand out is the multi-skilled approach, allowing apprentices to develop expertise across two key engineering areas:
- Electrical & Control and Instrumentation: covering motors, power supplies, electrical distribution, PLCs, sensors, flow systems, and safety controls.
- Electrical & Mechanical: combining electrical systems with mechanical components such as pumps, valves, gearboxes, pipework, and actuators.
In their day-to-day role, technicians carry out planned preventative maintenance to avoid issues, alongside reactive maintenance to resolve breakdowns quickly and effectively.
They prepare and complete work safely, record their activities, and ensure all tasks meet company and industry standards.
They work closely with engineers, operators, managers, and wider business teams, often balancing independent working with team-based tasks. Safety, reliability, and efficiency are
always at the heart of the role.
This is a core and options apprenticeship. An apprentice must be trained and assessed against the core and one option. The options are:
- Control and instrumentation engineering maintenance technician
- Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Technician
Typical Job Roles
Typical job roles include:
- Maintenance Technician
- Engineering Maintenance Technician
- Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance Technician
- Electrical & Instrumentation Technician
- Control, Instrumentation & Automation Technician
- Maintenance Engineering Technician
- Engineering Technician
Learner Entry Requirements
This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals looking to build a career as a multi-skilled maintenance engineer.
Typically, learners should:
- Be employed in an engineering or maintenance role
- Have a good standard of English and Maths (or be willing to achieve Functional Skills)
- Demonstrate an interest in both electrical and mechanical or control systems
- Have a practical, problem-solving mindset
- Be able to work safely in an industrial environment
- Show commitment to developing a broad range of engineering skills
Previous experience in engineering is helpful but not essential — we provide full support and structured training throughout.
Outcome of the Course
On completion of the apprenticeship, learners will be able to:
- Carry out maintenance across multiple engineering disciplines
- Diagnose and resolve faults in both electrical and mechanical or control systems
- Perform planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance activities
- Maintain plant and equipment to maximise uptime and performance
- Work safely in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and maintenance documentation
- Record and report maintenance activities accurately
- Contribute to continuous improvement and operational efficiency
Apprentices will complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) which includes:
- Practical observation with questioning
- Professional interview supported by a portfolio of evidence
- Multiple-choice knowledge test
On successful completion, apprentices will achieve a Level 3 Apprenticeship Certificate, graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction, and will be fully competent multi-skilled maintenance
technicians ready to make an immediate impact in the workplace.
