How to become an electrician in England: apprenticeship, college or NVQ?

This guide is for people in England considering that path, whether you’re leaving school, thinking about a career change, or a parent trying to make sense of the options on someone else’s behalf. It covers the main routes, what each one involves, what you’ll learn, and what pay and progression typically look like.

The quickest way to make sense of the detail is to separate three things: the job itself, the route you take to get into it, and the evidence and competence you build over time. This guide works through all three.

Electrician roles, training routes, and entry requirements vary depending on the employer, sector, age, and the type of work involved.

What is an electrician?

An electrician installs, maintains, inspects, tests and repairs electrical systems and equipment. In practice, that covers wiring systems, lighting, power supplies, protective devices, controls, and related equipment across domestic, commercial and industrial settings.

The work matters because electrical systems run through almost everything in the built environment, and done badly they can be dangerous. The work is safety-critical and standards-based, and it’s regulated accordingly. Electricians in England are expected to work to the requirements of BS 7671 (the Wiring Regulations), relevant codes of practice, and applicable health and safety legislation. If you’re not familiar with that term yet, BS 7671 is the national standard that sets out how electrical installations must be designed and installed.

The National Careers Service defines electricians as people who install power, lighting and renewable technologies in buildings, and inspect and repair electrical control systems and machinery.

What does an electrician do?

The stereotype (‘fixes plugs and fits lights’) undersells the role. On a given day an electrician might be reading technical drawings on a commercial fit-out one week and tracing a fault in a domestic property the next. The mix of tasks depends heavily on the employer, the type of work, and the sector.

Common day-to-day tasks include:

  • Reading drawings, plans, specifications, circuit information, and job instructions
  • Preparing the work area, tools, materials, and components before starting work
  • Installing or modifying wiring systems, equipment, and electrical components
  • Carrying out inspection, testing, fault-finding, and verification work
  • Recording test results and completing relevant documentation and certification
  • Following safe isolation procedures, PPE requirements, and quality standards
  • Working across different types of premises and projects, from domestic properties to industrial sites, depending on the employer and route

How do I become an electrician in England?

Training routes explained

There are several legitimate routes into electrician work in England, and they do not all lead to the same level of qualification, recognised competence, or workplace evidence. The common routes, as listed by the National Careers Service, are:

  • A college course
  • An apprenticeship
  • A work accreditation scheme, sometimes called experienced worker assessment
  • Applying directly

The sections below explain what those routes usually mean in practice. The important thing is to check what evidence, practical experience and recognised competence each route actually gives you.

Which electrician route might suit me best?

  • Apprenticeship: best if you want paid work, structured training and a recognised route into the trade.
  • College course: best if you want to build core knowledge before applying for an apprenticeship, trainee role or further training.
  • Specialist training provider: best if you want shorter, focused practical training or need to build confidence before a fuller route.
  • Direct application: best if you already have relevant practical experience, transferable skills or an employer willing to train you.
  • NVQ or experienced worker route: best if you are already working in the industry and need a work-based qualification to evidence competence.

Pathway one: electrical apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is usually the clearest route into electrician work because it combines paid employment with structured training. You learn on the job, complete off-the-job training, build evidence of competence and work towards end-point assessment.

You do not normally need to complete a separate electrical foundation course before starting an apprenticeship. The necessary technical knowledge and practical skills are developed through the apprenticeship itself, although individual employers and training providers may set their own entry requirements.

For electrical work, the relevant broad route is usually the Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship. It is designed around real workplace competence, not just classroom learning.

  • Typical level: Level 3
  • Typical duration: several years, depending on the employer, provider and learner starting point
  • Best for: people who want a paid job, structured training and a recognised occupational route

What is EPA, and what is gateway?

EPA stands for end-point assessment. It is the final assessment stage of an apprenticeship. Gateway is the point before EPA where the employer and training provider confirm that the apprentice is ready to be assessed.

In practical terms, gateway is where your training, evidence, workplace experience and required qualifications are checked before you move into the final assessment stage.

Pathway two: college qualifications

A college course can help you build core electrical knowledge and practical confidence before applying for work, an apprenticeship or further training. It can be a useful starting point if you are not yet employed in the industry.

College qualifications do not automatically make you a fully qualified electrician. You still need workplace experience and evidence of competence before you can work independently across the full role.

  • Best for: learners who want a structured classroom and workshop route before employment
  • Watch for: what practical work is included and what the qualification does, and does not, qualify you to do

Pathway three: specialist courses with a training provider

Specialist training providers often offer shorter, focused courses that build practical skills, confidence and technical understanding. These can be useful if you want a clearer feel for electrical work before committing to a longer route, or if you need targeted training in a specific area.

As with college courses, check exactly what you will leave with. A short course may be valuable, but it is not the same as a full apprenticeship or a complete work-based qualification.

Pathway four: applying directly

Some people enter electrical work by applying directly for trainee, mate, improver or assistant roles. This route depends heavily on the employer and your existing skills. It may suit people with relevant construction, maintenance, engineering or practical experience.

If you apply directly, ask how training will be structured and what recognised qualification or evidence you will build over time. Paid work alone does not automatically create a recognised route to competence.

Pathway five: NVQ – work-based qualification

An NVQ or experienced worker route is usually for people who are already doing relevant electrical work and need their competence assessed and evidenced. It is work-based, so you normally need access to suitable jobs, supervision and evidence from real tasks.

This route is not usually the right starting point for someone with no electrical experience. It is more often used by people who have already built practical experience and need a recognised way to evidence it.

Becoming an electrician with Elevated Knowledge

Elevated Knowledge is an apprenticeship provider and technical training centre based in Stockport, serving learners across the North West, Midlands, and wider UK.

For people who want an introduction to electrical principles, Elevated offers an Electrical Fundamentals course: three days, in person, at its Stockport centre. It covers the principles rather than the full qualification route and can help learners build knowledge and confidence before deciding on their next step.

However, completing the Electrical Fundamentals course is not a requirement for applying for or starting an apprenticeship. Learners can apply directly for suitable apprenticeship opportunities, subject to the entry requirements set by the employer and apprenticeship provider.

  • Level: Beginner
  • Duration: 3 days
  • Delivery: In person – Stockport
  • Assessment: Attendance and practical work
  • Outcome: Elevated Knowledge certificate of completion

As explained on the Electrical Fundamentals course page, the programme covers:

  • Ohm’s Law and standard units
  • AC and DC systems, transformers, single and three-phase supplies
  • Protective devices and their applications
  • Cable calculations, voltage drop, and adiabatic equations
  • IP ratings and external influences
  • Circuit types and sample layouts

Elevated also offers a range of other electrical courses for those further along in their training, including electrical safety courses, test equipment and fault diagnostics courses, and City and Guilds inspection and testing programmes. These are progression and specialist courses, not beginner entry routes.

Why become an electrician?

Career guidance has a habit of selling roles with phrases like “excellent prospects” and “growing demand” that sound meaningful and say very little. So here is a more honest version. Electrical work is skilled, standards-based work that isn’t easily automated or sent overseas. It’s physically demanding in some settings and requires sustained attention to detail and safe practice throughout. It’s not a career that rewards coasting. On the positive side, the range of settings and sectors is genuinely wide, the earning potential is reasonable relative to the training investment, and there is a clear progression path for people who are good at it and want to take it somewhere.

  • How long does it take? This depends on the route. The Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship is the main structured route. College courses typically run for one to two years. Neither route produces a fully qualified electrician on day one of employment: practical competence builds over time.
  • What are the working hours? The National Careers Service lists typical working hours for electricians at 37 to 45 hours per week. Depending on the employer and type of work, this can include on-call or shift patterns.
  • What are the working conditions? Conditions depend heavily on the job and setting. You may work indoors and outdoors, on construction sites, in industrial plants, in domestic properties, or in commercial buildings. The working environment can be cramped and at height. PPE is required.

What happens after qualifying?

Most electricians’ careers develop in a fairly natural way. You build experience in one or two environments, then take on more complex work as your competence becomes established. Specialism or added responsibility tends to follow from there, for those who want it. The broader and more varied your experience, the more options open up.

Practical progression examples include:

  • More complex installation or maintenance projects
  • Inspection and testing responsibilities
  • Fault diagnosis and work with specialist systems
  • Supervisory and team-leading roles
  • Training, assessor, or teaching routes
  • Progression into specific sectors such as renewables, industrial systems, or building services engineering
  • Self-employment: the National Careers Service notes this as a realistic progression route for experienced electricians

Inspection and testing, 18th Edition, solar PV, battery storage, control and instrumentation, and fault diagnostics all tend to come later, once someone already has a foundation of broader experience to specialise from.

What you’ll learn (learning outcomes)

Whatever route you take, the practical content tends to cover the same ground. The specifics depend on the standard and provider, but safe set-up, consistent practice, and documented evidence of your work come up across all of them.

Across routes, you can expect to cover:

  • Working safely: hazard awareness, PPE, safe isolation procedures, and maintaining a safe work area
  • Reading technical information: drawings, specifications, circuit diagrams, and job documentation
  • Identifying and checking materials, tools, components, and systems before work begins
  • Understanding electrical principles and common system types (AC/DC, single and three-phase, protective devices)
  • Setting up equipment correctly and preparing for installation or maintenance work
  • Installation, maintenance, inspection, testing, and fault-finding work to standard
  • Recognising quality and safety issues during and after work
  • Recording test results, documentation, and certification

For apprenticeships, you’ll also need to produce documented evidence for gateway before you can progress to end-point assessment. Your training provider will tell you what that needs to include.

Pay and progression

Two topics tend to get mixed together here, so it’s worth separating them clearly.

Apprentice pay rules in England

  • Apprentices in England are entitled to at least the apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage if they’re under 19, or if they’re 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship.
  • Once an apprentice turns 19 and completes their first year, they’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for their age rather than the lower apprentice rate.

From April 2026: apprentice rate £8.00 per hour

  • Apprentices must be paid for all normal working hours and for training that forms part of the apprenticeship, including the off-the-job training element.

Typical pay and hours

  • Based on National Careers Service data, typical pay for electricians runs from £26,000 (starter salary) to £45,000 (experienced), with typical working hours of 37 to 45 per week.

Treat those figures as a general guide rather than a guarantee. Pay varies considerably by location, sector, overtime arrangements, and the type of work. An industrial maintenance electrician on shifts in a manufacturing plant and a domestic installer working for a small contractor will often be on very different rates, even at the same experience level.
